Adina Butar: The Voice of Vulnerability in the World of EDM

In a world dominated by beats and bass drops, Adina Butar brings something rare—soul. A seasoned EDM artist and songwriter, she’s carved her own path with fearless authenticity, from performing on global stages to becoming the first female artist signed by Schulz Music Group. Adina opens up about motherhood, creative independence, and the emotional heartbeat behind her upcoming debut album.

Adina, in the world of EDM, there aren’t many female songwriters on the big stage. Was it challenging to become the first female artist in Schulz Music Group? Whisper marked a powerful beginning for your solo career. What inspired you to step out of the shadow of collaborations and start releasing music under your own name?

It definitely wasn’t easy to step into a space that’s still very male-dominated, especially in the EDM world. Being the first female artist signed to Schulz Music Group was a huge milestone at the time — and I don’t take it lightly. I knew that if I was going to break through, I had to bring not just talent, but a sense of purpose, because representation matters.

Whisper felt like the perfect first statement. It was the beginning of me truly owning my voice — not just as a vocalist or collaborator, but as a full artist with my own stories to tell. I had spent years lending my voice and lyrics to other projects, and I’m proud of that. But I also reached a point where I felt this pull to step out of the shadow of collaborations and stand fully in my own light. I wanted to show other women, especially in this genre, that we don’t have to wait to be chosen. We can choose ourselves.

You’ve performed on stages from Tomorrowland to Untold. What makes performing at home in Romania special for you, and how does your local audience respond to your music?

There’s nothing like performing at home in Romania. No matter how many global stages I stand on — Tomorrowland, Untold, wherever — there’s an energy in Romania that’s different. It’s more than excitement; it’s emotional. It feels like coming full circle every time.

Romanian audiences are incredibly passionate and intuitive. They feel everything. They don’t just listen to the beats — they hear the lyrics, the intention, the soul behind the music. That kind of connection fuels me in a way that’s hard to describe. It’s like the music hits deeper because there’s this shared cultural and emotional thread running through it.

You once said that in Europe — especially in London and Romania — you can create deeper music than in the U.S. What is it about that atmosphere that opens you up as a songwriter?

There’s something about Europe — especially cities like London and, of course, Romania — that just invites emotional honesty. The pace, the architecture, the atmosphere, the weather… it gives you space to feel and reflect. It’s less about formulas and more about depth.

In the U.S., especially in mainstream spaces, there can be this pressure to create for trends. But in Europe, I’ve always felt more freedom to go inward and explore the emotional layers of a song. As a songwriter, that’s everything. That’s why some of my most vulnerable and honest writing has come out of those environments. They don’t just allow for depth — they demand it.

You’re now the mother of little Liam. How has motherhood changed you as an artist? Do you feel a new emotional depth in your music? Also, tell us about your creative chemistry with his father, Markus Schulz — not only your life partner but also your co-writer and producer.

Becoming Liam’s mum has transformed me in ways I never imagined. He gave me so much courage and inspiration — more than I ever thought possible. Having him didn’t make me want to put my dreams on hold; it made me want to embrace them fully. He inspired me to become the best version of myself — not just for me, but for him.

You know how people often say, “I would die for my children,” but I started asking myself, “Would I truly live for him?” Would I chase my dreams, take care of my body, nourish my soul, and keep growing — not just to tell him it’s important, but to show him? I want to be a living example that going after your dreams matters. That’s the kind of legacy I want to pass on.

Working with Markus — my partner in every sense — has only deepened that. Our creative chemistry is rooted in love, trust, and a shared vision. He sees the real me, and together we push each other further.

There’s something so powerful about creating with someone who knows your heart and your history. It’s not always easy, but it’s honest — and that honesty is what makes the music come alive.

For this first album, I’ve been blessed to work with Markus on several tracks like Whisper, where he was involved in the production. But I’ve also had the chance to collaborate with other incredible talents. For Somebody to Love and Escape You, I worked with Gabriel Huiban and Pavlo Vicci as producers, and for the writing, I teamed up with the amazing Petra. Each collaboration brought a different flavour and emotional layer to the project, and I’m so proud of how it’s all coming together.

I also spent some time in London and co-wrote a few songs with the talented Victoria Horn, which I’m considering for the album as well.

What is the core idea or message you want to share with your upcoming debut album?
Should your listeners expect emotional immersion, dancefloor euphoria, or something entirely new?

The core message of my debut album is about reclaiming your power through vulnerability. It’s a journey through love, heartbreak, healing, and rebirth. Every song is a reflection of real emotions I’ve lived through — moments where I felt lost, moments where I found strength I didn’t know I had, and everything in between.

You can expect emotional immersion for sure — this album is honest and raw. But you’ll also find moments of dancefloor euphoria, where that emotional energy transforms into something uplifting and freeing. It’s not just one thing — it’s a full spectrum of feeling.

My hope is that when people listen, they don’t just hear music — they feel seen. Whether they’re dancing, crying, or dreaming in their car, I want them to connect with something real. This album is me showing up fully, and I hope it inspires others to do the same.
